A Weekend Guide to Round Top, Texas

Round Top gets famous twice a year, when Antique Week fills the fields. But ask the locals and they'll tell you the real magic is the other fifty weeks — when the square is quiet, the pie is still warm, and you can hear yourself think. Here's how to spend a perfect, unhurried weekend.

Saturday: the square and beyond

Start with coffee and a slow morning — if you're staying with us, the porch does most of the work. Head into town mid-morning and wander Henkel Square Market, where restored 19th-century buildings house shops, galleries, and tasting rooms that stay open year-round. Stop at Royers Pie Haven for a slice and a coffee.

Lunch is non-negotiable: Royers Round Top Café on the square, where the pies have a national reputation and the grilled quail deserves one. Afternoons are for Junk Gypsy and the shops along the highway — many of the antique barns and design shops keep weekend hours even outside show season.

For dinner, stay close to home: JW's Steakhouse in Carmine is five minutes from the ranch and does Texas steaks and comfort food right. Or make an evening of it at Busted Oak Cellars — boutique Texas wine, live music on weekends, and a sunset that doesn't quit.

Sunday: countryside and culture

Drive out to Festival Hill, where the Round Top Festival Institute hosts world-class classical concerts in a hall that has no business being this beautiful this far from a city. In summer, catch Shakespeare at Winedale, performed in a historic hay barn by University of Texas students — a beloved tradition since 1970.

On your way out, swing through La Grange for the Texas Quilt Museum and one last slice of small-town Texas before the highway takes you home.

Where to stay

Reindeer Ranch sits on 50 acres in Carmine, seven miles from the square — close to everything above, removed from all of it. Cabins named for reindeer, a pond full of fish, painted buntings in the trees, and a family that treats your weekend like it matters.
